The Local Need
There are estimated to be over 6000 deaths per year from cancer in the three counties of the Thames Valley. Up to 1500 of these patients will require inpatient palliative care and up to 4000 may require help from palliative care support teams. In Berkshire alone the numbers are 600 and 1550 respectively.
Thames Hospicecare provides a service, in Ascot and Windsor to families living in the area shown in the map. The incidence of cancer and non-malignant disease increases with age so it follows that the need for palliative care is greatest for the older age groups.
The ageing demographic profile of the country will therefore place further strain on the future provision of palliative care.
Thames Hospicecare receives 25% of its operating costs from local Primary Care Trusts. We need to raise 75% to meet our annual bills.

What is palliative care? Palliative Care is the ‘total care’ of patients with life-limiting complex disease, and their families, by a multi-disciplinary team who have undergone recognised advanced palliative care training.
