Warren jumps for hospice and daughter

Warren jumps for HospiceOn Friday 14th October 2011, 69 year old Warren Burg took on one of his fears in aid of Thames Hospicecare and for his daughter Michelle who is receiving care at the Hospice.

For my daughter, Michelle the hospice has been an oasis for her. The hospice is the place she has been happiest in and when she is well enough she likes to serenade the Hospice staff and other patients with her grade 8 piano skills, a great blessing.

“The nurses and staff are so caring, hospitable and kind and nothing is ever too much trouble for them.

“ I decided I wanted to do something to give back to Thames Hospicecare. All monies raised will be much appreciated and put to good use to relieve some of the pain, worry and pressure this horrible disease can inflict on my daughter and others like her.” Warren jumps for Hospice

Mr Burg, who is originally from New York, said he had feared jumping from a plane since signing up to the US Air Force.

He added: “I joined the US Air Force when I was 20 and I thought I would have to jump out of a plane. When I found out I would not have to I was quite relieved.

“I am now facing my fears after 49 years.”

On the day:

From Warren’s perspective: “The weather couldn't have been better. Mid October and I was flying through the air with only a jump suit on! It was amazing. The timing was perfect. My son and his two boys came up from London and arrived as I did. I got briefed and trained and was one of the first to go up. As I was walking to the plane my daughter, Michelle and her two boys arrived. At 10.39 my instructor and I departed from a perfectly serviceable aeroplane and freefell about 6,000 feet. It was an amazing experience and one which I would consider taking up as a sport if I could afford it. I didn't get the feeling that I was hurtling towards earth at a great rate of knots as I feared I would have. In fact when I look at the videos had a smile on my face the whole time.

Then when we approached the landing spot I waved to all my family below watching their dad glide to a perfect landing right in front of them. Doesn't get much better than that!

Warren Burg raised over £1600 for Thames Hospicecare which can fund over 64 hours of specialist hospice nursing care. Thank you.
